Personality development : Negative Self-Talk
Getting rid of negative self talk is key to our personality development. We are all suffering from negative self talk. Either we said it aloud or in our head. I used to have a terrible opinion about my skills, my abilities, and myself in general.
It is difficult and disempowering to live this way. I mean, you are litteraly abusing yourself. Who feels good talking themselves down all day?
Things you say to yourself like I am an idiot, I am useless etc. How would you feel if somebody say these to you?
All what negative self-talk does to you is fuelling you anger emotion.
Not only does it make you weak, it is also holding you back from your dreams and successes.
I realized quickly that I was throwing my life away, if I didn’t get that negative self-talk out of my system. I had enough of it. So I decided to find a way to stop my negative self-talk.
Here are two simple way that have made the difference for me and empowered me to be who I am today:
1. Key to negative self-talk : Stop swearing.
You don’t know but you are self-sabotaging yourself with all these swearing word. Whether that directed to you or to another person.
So No f-word, no BS word, none of that any more.
Just think for a moment if someone swear at you how that makes you feeling? What is your reaction?
The next time you catch yourself swearing, calling yourself some names, talking yourself down, talking about yourself negatively, stop. Take that conversation and put it into a scenario or precisely into a story.
Create the script in which your are the main hero but tell it to yourself in the third person. You will realise that this way you will disconnect yourself from the negative thoughts.
By scripting and telling yourself a story, you take another perspective of the situation. From an neutral point view, everything seems to be less difficult, because it is disconnected from yourself.
2. Contribute to others lives
Our mind cannot do two things at the same times. You can stop negative self talk when we can manage to focus on something else other than your situation. I’ve learned that contributing to another person’s life really gets my mind occupied, because I’m busy thinking about how I am going to help them, be of use for them.
So you benefit from helping other people by:
Occupying your mind through focusing on another person’s needs.
You will feel good because you know you are doing something great.
In my previous article I spoke about how important with motivation you can help people grow
Therefore you replace the habit of negative self talk with a healthy and positive habit. Which you are making the world a better place.
The focus shifts from yourself to how you can help others better themselve and the negative self-talk disappears.
In fact, the self-talk changes from being negative to positive, simply because internally you know that you are doing the right thing by helping someone.
